The route called “Via dei Santi” includes 11 Municipalities, spread between the “Alfieri Hills”, from the name of the powerful family from Asti that owned them in the past, and the “Lands of Saints”, where important figures of local and international religiosity were born and worked, starting with Saint Giovanni Bosco.
This area of Monferrato is rich in small votive chapels, built by the inhabitants especially between the Eighteenth and the beginnings of the Twentieth century, in order to celebrate a grace received or to prevent hailstorm and plague.
Specifically this itinerary is related to Saint Giuseppe Marello, the founder of Congregation of Oblati, whose father’s family was from San Martino Alfieri. The saint, born in Turin in 1844, spent in the village his childhood, until his family came back in the city. He attended studies at the Seminary in Asti and survived to typhus fever miraculously; he was ordained a priest in 1868, starting his activity as “a social saint”, on the model of Don Bosco. He dedicated his life totally to the help of children and poor people and established in Asti the Order of “Oblati di San Giuseppe”. He became Bishop of Acqui Terme in 1888. He died suddenly in 1895, when he was only fifty years old.
He will be beatified in 1993 and finally consecrated in 2001 by the Pope John Paul II.
Along the Tanaro river, this route very nearly reaches the line with the rocky hills of Roero, where vineyards of Arneis and Nebbiolo peep out. Along the way, you discover the old town of San Damiano d’Asti, the castle of San Martino Alfieri, the village of Antignano, the cherry trees of Revigliasco and the small chapels of Celle Enomondo.
Going up to the direction of Asti, you will see the castle of Monale, the hazelnut trees of Castellero, the country Romanesque church of Tigliole, the murales of Cortandone and the vineyards of Freisa of Roatto.
An itinerary where the gentle series of ups and downs connects wild woods and fields without interruption, offering an immersion in the local culture all-round.

The old towns of San Damiano d’Asti and Tigliole, both of them of great historical and architectural interest, are not crossed directly by the route visible on Piemonte Outdoor website, but are reachable easly by short deviations from the main way.
